Fall

Autumn is finally here. I notice it when I leave my flat to head to work as I feel and smell the crisp, cold, fresh morning air against my face with a seasonal pumpkin spiced latte in one hand and the latest album by Catfish in the Bottlemen in the other.

Yes, it's starting to get dark earlier, the heavens have opened and the strong gail force winds happily blow over every plant pot on my window sill. But I love the fall. I love gathering all of my summer clothing and replacing them with warm, snuggly jumpers, big woollen and fur coats. Fall is the perfect time to start experimenting once again with warm hues, structure and layering.

I've never been a huge fan of wearing colour since I studied printed textiles at university and surrounded myself with colour until I felt physically sick. Since working in COS, my approach towards styling has developed into buying more classic and simplistic pieces. So far, my essential wardrobe piece has been a long grey wool coat, which I recently purchased and consequently have had to live off beans and soup for the past week. But it has been oh, so worth it. Grey looks great with a tan, which can still be lingering from the summer. Most people think of grey as a "washed out colour" but carefully placed on the body - it can look beautiful.

I recently read an old interview with the great Yohji Yamamoto, which has completely changed my views on what to wear. He discusses "the idea of a coat guarding and hiding a woman’s body. For me, a woman who is absorbed in her work, who does not care about gaining one’s favour, strong yet subtle at the same time, is essentially more seductive. The more she hides and abandons her femininity, the more it emerges from the very heart of her existence. A pair of brilliantly cut cotton trousers can be more beautiful than a gorgeous silk gown."
